Local Area

Hidden away on the eastern coast of the Gulf of Trieste, Portopiccolo’s stunning location makes it the perfect base for trips across northern Italy, as well as to Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, or even further afield. And there’s so much to see here. The surrounding region, Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, is alive with picturesque towns, thrilling cities, and beautiful natural surroundings. The area is one of Italy’s most beautiful yet –outside of Venice– it remains little-visited by tourists. This means that much of Venezia-Giulia’s most spectacular sights, from the snowbound peaks of the Carnic Alps to the white shingle beaches that dot the coast, are yours to explore undisturbed.

Trieste

The City of Good Food and Great Coffee

A place where locals fill the squares and parks, swapping stories and enjoying the balmy breezes from the North Adriatic. Trieste’s position on Italy’s eastern frontier has made it one of Europe’s most culturally unique cities, with a history that stretches from the Romans, through the 500-year period of Hapsburg occupation, and all the way to modern-day Italy. As such, Trieste has served as the muse to many artists.

Riserva di Duino

Explore Stunning Ruins

Take in the view or hike the beautiful Sentiero Rilke path along the clifftops. Duino’s star attraction is the famous Castello di Duino. Perched precariously above the waves below, with views that stretch far across the bay, this ancient castle has stood here since 1389. Spend an afternoon exploring its ancient architecture, visiting the on-site museum, and uncovering the eclectic collection inside.

Castello di Miramare

On the Tip of the Promontory of Grignano

Overlooking the sea, the Castle is surrounded by a beautiful park with valuable botanical species. A noble residence commissioned by Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg, was built between 1856 and 1860 by Archduke Maximilian of Austria, later Emperor of Mexico. Characterised by the “white towers”, it is a prime example of nineteenth-century architecture and a revisited construction of a medieval fortress.
